It sounds extremely simplistic, but research has proven that time and time again, students must read and write daily. Not just read their phones or instructions to projects, but READ. Students need to be made aware of a variety of genres. How else will they know what they enjoy?
Thriller, true crime, SHAKESPEARE ---- check out the research that backs the modern kid reading Shakespeare. You have to critically think through the whole thing! How else do you know what he is trying to say? Re-read, read between the lines...those are allllll skills that kids need today. Heck, adults need them too!
Now for writing, I will admit that the 5 paragraph essay is OLD SCHOOL. However, kids need to be writing something that they choose and something that they can share in the mode of their choice. Blogs are cool, but what about old fashioned peer sharing?
Give kids a chance to write songs and poetry, plays and short stories. It's those experiences of editing and re-editing that will form the confidence they need for the BIG essays in high school and beyond!
