I'm teaching Of Mice and Men again and thinking a lot about The American Dream. Does it constantly change? Does it change for everyone, or just me?
My American Dream is actually happening. Right now.
I have a home and a family, enough food, a yard, and a way to get to work.
However, if I really want to pursue my happiness, that would mean that I would do more.
I want to be the best version of ME. Not someone else. ME.
I want to learn more and write more and read more and be more.

For example, I like to paint and to write. I know I have some talent, but I'm not the best. I want to be.
Actually, I don't care about being the best, but I would like to get better.
I saw a quote somewhere that said we should have three types of hobbies:
one that makes you happy
one that makes you money
and one that brings you peace (or something similar).
Art and writing could be all three of those things if I were good enough and worked hard enough.
I also love to make people happy. I want them to feel special. I want to bring out the strengths of others and have them realize their potential.
That's my new dream. I guess it really is always evolving and changing.
And then just when you thought it couldn't get any wilder -- or crazier --
I want to make sure my children have these rights and their own dreams. They should be created equally, but they should also be in competition with their peers.
They should be able to pursue their own happiness -- not mine, theirs.
What will our society look like when they are my age?
Will the government be even more involved in our lives?
Something to think about..
Until next time.
