I finisheD Lonesome Dove.
Written by Larry McMurtry, Lonesome Dove is an absolute masterpiece of epic proportions. Let me be crystal clear: a 900 page book about the Wild West and cowboys? Whores? Snakes?
Heck no. Don't sign me up. I retract my nomination.
However...
my husband has been bugging the ever-loving stew out of me to read it!! He would mention it when I returned from the library and had a big stack of my typical genre. Finally, I told him that if he read Station Eleven, I would read Lonesome Dove. He read my book, so I was stuck. I had to do it.
Oh, I made excuses and tried to get out of it. "I have two book club meetings coming up," I said. "I don't have time for this big mother."
He would gently remind me of our bargain and I was pinned again.
So, I settled in. I even documented a bit of my journey here and on Instagram, Twitter, and, of course, Goodreads.

This big ole stack of bound paper has so many themes that we all can relate to, regardless of our sex or race. Call and Gus have a friendship to rival all. Neither is perfect, but it works. When the chips are down, they're ready to take care of one another.
There are a few really interesting love stories here. Most of them don't end with ".. And they lived happily ever after."
Sad? Yes. Realistic? Heck yes.
There is danger at every turn. This is the Wild West, after all.
I urge you guys to give this monster of a novel a try. It may take you a week or two, but it's definitely worth every moment spent immersed. Trust me.

To entice you, here are some memorable quotes from the tome:
- "It ain’t dying I’m talking about, it’s living. I doubt it matters where you die, but it matters where you live.” ~spoken by Augustus McCrae
- "I'm sure partial to the evening,' Augustus said. 'The evening and the morning. If we just didn't have to have the rest of the dern day I'd be a lot happier."
- "Call saw that everyone was looking at him, the hands and cowboys and townspeople alike. The anger had drained out of him, leaving him feeling tired. He didn't remember the fight, particularly, but people were looking at him as if they were stunned. He felt he should make some explanation, though it seemed to him a simple situation. "I hate a man that talks rude," he said. "I won't tolerate it."
- "Live through it," Call said. "That's all we can do."
In conclusion, I would like to thank The Academy and my husband for being a book-pusher. I love you, Bill.
Now let's watch the miniseries.
